O GRUPO

THE GROUP
TESC – The Amazonas Experimental Theater is a non-profit cultural institution sponsored by SESCAmazonas - The State of Amazonas Branch of the Brazilian Social Commerce Service (A non governamental organization established in 1946 by the Brazilian trade industry to develop welfare and culture among the workers of commerce). Founded in l968, the company immediately rose to the rank of one of the most important theatrical movements in Brazil, presenting plays which followed two different trends of research in the performing arts.
The first trend is turned to a critical view of the historical process of the Amazon, and it reached great success both from the public and the critics, with plays such as “The Rubber Boom Burlesque”, “There’s a Piranha in my Soup” and “The Small Theatre of Happiness”.
The second trend of research brings to the stage the cultural universe of the different Native-American people of the Amazon, with plays such as the pop opera “The Beginning Before the Beginning”, the tragedies “The Passion of Ajuricaba” and “Jurupari – the Battle of the Sexes”.
As of 2003, with a new production of “The Passion of Ajuricaba”, - and the establishment of a new cast, the TESC also changed into a center of social inclusion of young people, working with grantees in the different areas of the Performing Arts.
The Native-Americans, their myths, humor and sarcasm, an immense region supposedly without a History, there lay the groundwork of TESC – the Amazonas Experimental Theater.
The TESC is directed by the Brazilian writer, playwright and stage director Márcio Souza, author of novels such as “The Emperor of the Amazon”, “Mad Maria” and “Death Squeeze”, as well as plays such as “The Passion of Ajuricaba” and “There’s a Piranha in my Soup”.
